Nigerian elections 2007: prospects for violence

Nigeria is inching closer to new elections to all elective positions: national, state and local government levels. Presently, some parties have started their primaries and as expected violence is becoming the order of the day. Many have been reported killed in clashes involving supporters of rival contestants. If this is happening for just the ward and state congresses (primaries), I wonder what it will be like when the higher-staked presidential primaries begin soon. Why can’t Nigeria have a process that is clean and devoid of all violence? It makes it much more difficult for genuine and honest politicians with the good of the country at heart to come out to contest. When thuggery and money-politics takes centre stage, what hope is there for integrity?
